Sir Chandrasekhara (Venkata) Raman Biography (1888–1970)
Physicist, born in Trichinopoly, now Tiruchchirappalli, S India. He studied at Chennai (Madras), and became professor of physics at Calcutta (1917–33) and director of the Indian Institute of Science at Bangalore. In 1929 he was knighted, and in 1930 awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics for his discoveries relating to the scattering of light (the Raman effect).
